Who can play Youth Rugby?

Everybody! Young boys and girls are introduced to rugby via "tag rugby" (2 hand touch), a non-contact version of the game.   Tackle rugby is also offered.   Watch this 5 minute video on youth rugby.

Touch Rugby? What's the point?

Rugby is a flowing game of continuous movement, similar in this respect to basketball or soccer.   The point is to keep the ball alive, moving it forward by running and passing.  This is a much more important aspect of the game than big hits, at all levels of the game.   Touch rugby preserves this flow in a way that allows girls and boys, and kids of wider age ranges, to play together.   Many adult teams play touch rugby as part of training.

What age groups play touch rugby?

Touch rugby is coed and divided by grade - PreK - K, 1st and 2nd, 3rd and 4th.  3rd and 4th graders have the option of playing touch or tackle rugby.

Age groups for tackle?

Most clubs within Rugby Virginia start offering tackle rugby to 3rd and 4th graders.   We also offer tackle teams for 3rd and 4th graders, 5th and 6th graders, 7th and 8th graders, HS JV and V boys and MS and HS girls.

When is the youth season?

The spring season is tackle only and practice begins in February.  Games run from March to May.  The season ends with a state tournament in May.

Our summer season offers both touch and tackle teams and starts praciticing in May. Games are in June and July.  The season ends with a state tournament in July.

When are practices for summer rugby?

Practices are held Monday and Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the recreation field located in back of J. Sargeant Community College, Parham Road Campus.

What equipment do I need?

Rugby players will need cleats (soccer style is best). Rugby game shorts, socks and mouthpiece will be given to all players once registered.  All new players will receive a rugby ball.  Team owned jerseys are provided for all games.
